TZOLK'IN COLLECTION

I’ve always been fascinated by the Mayan Tzolk'in calendar -- especially its cyclical nature and the idea that each day carries its own unique energy. This series of twenty paintings began in 2021, and is my way of exploring that concept, still 4 years later.

To capture the feeling of an evolving cycle, I decided the series itself needed to grow and change. Every piece starts the same way: with a vibrant, flowing alcohol ink background and a central black square. But from there, they branch off in different directions. Some pieces I leave in this pure form, letting the colorful glyph and the vibrant background speak for themselves. For others, I layer intricate geometric patterns over the ink, creating a conversation between the flowing colors and the structured lines. And for a special few, I replace the central symbol altogether. In its place, I paint a realistic oil painting-- a detailed scene or a portrait that tells the story of that day sign’s specific energy.

This series is an unfolding story of time and transformation. The works displayed above are the first chapter. I invite you to follow along to witness the full cycle come to life and to discover which form each of the twenty energies will ultimately take.
